Health implications of disrupted circadian rhythms and the potential for daylight as therapy.

چکیده
1170 May 2015 F or many thousands of years, the sun was our only source of light, and human behavior followed a natural day–night cycle. This milieu began to change approximately 150 yr ago with the invention of incandescent lighting. Electric lighting disrupted our behavioral dependence on the day–night cycles of the sun and facilitated alterations in our circadian sleep–wake cycles. recent research has begun to identify the physiologic consequences of unnatural light exposure and subsequently altered circadian rhythms.1 In this article, we review the molecular basis of circadian rhythms and discuss the established connection between disrupted circadian rhythms and clinical disease. We also explore the concept of daylight as therapy to restore disrupted circadian rhythms and improve clinical outcomes.

‘In a dark place, we find ourselves’: light intensity in critical care units
Intensive care units provide specialised care for critically ill patients around the clock. However, intensive care unit patients have disrupted circadian rhythms. Furthermore, disrupted circadian rhythms are associated with worse outcome. As light is the most powerful 're-setter' of circadian rhythm, we measured light intensity on intensive care unit. Light intensity was low compared to daylig...
متن کاملInfluence of N-Phthaloyl GABA on the Circadian Rhythms of Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidants in Wistar Rats under Constant Light
N-Phthaloyl GABA was administrated daily (50 mg/Kg body weight-i.p) to Wistar rats for 21 days and circadian rhythms of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and antioxidants such as reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were studied under constant light (LL) conditions. Delayed acrophase of TBARS and advanced acrophase of antioxidants (GSH, CAT and ...
متن کاملWomen with hereditary breast cancer predispositions should avoid using their smartphones, tablets and laptops at night
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, both in the developed and developing countries. Women with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Recent studies show that short-wavelength visible light disturb the secretion of melatonin and causes circadian rhythm disruption. We have previously studied the health effects of exposure...
متن کاملEffects of Lycium barbarum. polysaccharide on type 2 diabetes mellitus rats by regulating biological rhythms
Objective(s): Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with circadian disruption. Our previous experimental results have showed that dietary Lycium barbarum. polysaccharide (LBP-4a) exhibited hypoglycemic and improving insulin resistance (IR) activities. This study was to explore the mechanisms of LBP-4a for improving hyperglycemia and IR by regulating biological rhythms in T2DM rats. Mat...
متن کاملCircadian clock disruption in neurodegenerative diseases: cause and effect?
Disturbance of the circadian system, manifested as disrupted daily rhythms of physiologic parameters such as sleep, activity, and hormone secretion, has long been observed as a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease. Circadian abnormalities have generally been considered consequences of the neurodegeneration. Recent evidence suggests, however, that circadian ...
